Smiles vs. Frowns

Here is some crap I have to get off my chest. What is up with people who can't see past skin tone, religious beliefs, and any other non-relevant ethnic quality?

I work for a newspaper where you can comment on articles online. Everyday someone, usually more than one, says something stupid about a race or makes a racist slur. It is unbelievable to me that in this day and age we can't get past this garbage.

People in other countries kill each other over religious beliefs. Why? Does that make your more holy than the next. Does any religion okay this behavior? Do you think that by you doing this, this will get people to join your community?

I just cannot understand why people can't just look past someone's beliefs or ethnic background and judge them for the person they are. Is it really that hard to take people for what they are and not judge them?

I try my hardest everyday not to ever make anyone feel bad or talk badly about anyone. Everyone has bad qualities, why point them out, I try to focus on the good. Tell people their good qualities and lift their esteem or just try to bring a smile to someone's face.

Isn't it better to smile than to frown? Everyone out there that hates or discriminates, has anything you've done concerning this matter made your life any better?

Take from me and just mellow the f out!

Aggressive Drivers

We've all been there, you are already going 5-10 MPH over the speed limit and some jack-arse is so close to your bumper you can't even see his/her headlights. What's the point of this obnoxious behavior? What can you do about it?

There are a few things you can do as a driver. First you can pull over and let the speed racer go by. I typically never do this unless I feel real unsafe about the person behind me. I am a taurus and can be very bullheaded. Typically I slow down to the speed limit, set my cruise control and wave to the person behind me.

Is this safe? Probably not, but it sure pisses off the tailgater. For one it shows you are not intimidated by their driving, for two they are not getting you mad, which they very well might be trying to do. They get zero satisfaction out of doing this and only become more irate. This could backfire and pretty much get your run off the road, but that has yet to happen.

The thing I love to see, and this happens about 99% of the time, the driver finally gets by, floors it, and takes off. Usually I see this person at every stop light. Typically they never get anywhere any faster, they just cause major wear on their automobile and eat up more gas.

Aggressive drivers are more than just tailgaters, they are drivers who continously drive 15 MPH or more over the speed limit, drivers who never think they are wrong or at fault, and drivers that always think they are the best driver and everyone else is the worst.

There is a whole list of traits listed here: Aggressive Driving Stats (forgive the look of the web site, the stats are interesting, but the design lacks.)

My favorite thing on the road today is when someone else is really at fault and they flip you off for it. I have had people cut me off, almost broadside me, and I get the FU and the bird, it is quite shocking. I am sorry, I did not know I wasn't allowed to drive on your street and obey simple traffic signals. My bad.

A question to aggressive drivers: Have you ever really gotten anywhere faster?

Tobacco

Where to start? How about tobacco kills! If you think differently, you are probably a smoker. Everytime you indulge in tobacco you are killing yourself.

Before you get all hasty, I smoked for eight years before I successfully quit. Starting smoking was the dumbest thing I have ever done, but quitting was by far the best.

To this day I still get cravings (2.5 years later) but you just deal with them, I will never smoke again. In fact after I quit I am now extremely sensitive to smoke. I get an instant headache if exposed.

I try to get others to quit, but I get the "You only smoked for eight years, try 20." Let me set this straight. The body doesn't know who long it has been addicted, just that it is dependent on a substance that is unnatural for it. So saying smoking for 20 years over 8 years is harder to quit is just plain false. Addiction is addiction. Everyone goes through withdrawl, not just 10+ year smokers.

The reason we get these responses, is because people don't want to quit, or have no willpower to quit, but if they really wanted to quit they would. No number of pamphlets/propaganda will ever make them quit. I have seen people watch loved ones die of smoking related illnesses, then light up 5 minutes later. That is how strong addiction is for smokers.

Now that I have become smoke free, I am a huge supporter of thetruth.com. I think what they do is great and they should continue to educate more and more people. The marketing companies for big tobacco will forever try to convince you that smoking will not kill you. They may not come out and say it, but have you have seen an ad from big tobacco where the smoker is not having the time of their life?

An interesting fact: Every 8 seconds someone dies from a tobacco related illness.

Check the counter below to see how many people have died from tobacco this year.

That is just an insane number and will continue to grow unless people continue to quit. If you are not a smoker, this still affects you. You breathe in what other exhale. That will kill you just as fast. You need to get involved and try to make a difference.

Tobacco will never be illegal because big tobacco, as well as other large companies, run this country. They financially support our government, and they will never be put out of business. The only way to make them lose money is to quit.

Don't give another dollar to a company that wants you dead.

HIV and AIDS

Okay here is a topic...

How we can get rid of AIDS.

I have been watching this great HBO 5 part series on AIDS around the world and am dumbfounded by the ignorance of the human race. For the most part people know how NOT to get HIV. There are some parts of the world that have little or no knowledge of the disease or the prevention, and that is our fault, the entire world needs to have this knowledge made accessible to them.

Now back to the doumentary. I was watching the 3rd part of this series focusing in India where about 1 million people are infected with HIV or AIDS. They are number 2 next to South Africa. Now what struck me about this part of the series is that these people know the dangers of unprotected sex, drug use, all the classic high risks lifestyles, but just don't care.

A man with HIV said that 5 minutes of pleasure with a prostitute was worth the risks of contracting HIV. Better yet his wife knew he has HIV but wanted a child so badly, had sex with him anyway just to get pregnant? Smart??? I think not. Luckily the child was born HIV negative, but will now have to live a life with (2) HIV positive parenst, which will probably die within years because they can not afford drugs for this illness.

Another report I read was about spring break here in America. It stated that 73% of spring breakers have sex with 3 to 5 different partners in that given week and DO NOT use protection!

How dumb do you have to be to risk throwing your life away for sex? Is it really that important?

Everyone always talks about the importance of curing AIDS, but this is a disease that can cure itself, if people would just think before they act. This illness will plague us for all of mankind because no one will ever be able to control their sexual urges.

C'mon world, is sex and drugs really more important than life?

Every 10 seconds someone dies from AIDS.
